Get ready for the 2022 PCY Dads Cornhole Tournament!
It's hard to believe that it was way back in 2016 when I got the bug for the wonderfully inclusive, casual, competitive and addictive game of Cornhole, so much so that I decided to hold a school fundraiser tournament at Memorial Park. While there were a few bumps, twists and turns in the following years, I managed to keep it going every spring except for 2020 (a year we all would like to forget). Well it is almost that time again when we dust off the old bags, pull out those boards and start practicing for a chance to get your name engraved on the legacy trophy!
While I have enjoyed managing the tournament, it has been difficult to create sustained interest and collecting payment sometimes felt like pulling teeth (not to mention trying to run a tournament and play at the same time). My youngest child has graduated from PCY and this is the perfect time to step back and pass the baton. Jeremy Warner and Chris Yee (longtime tournament supporters and defending champions) have graciously offered to take it on and have ideas to continually improve the tournament as we get 'back to normal' in a post-pandemic world.
Some things to get excited about:
- The entry fee will include raffle tickets for a chance to win a nice set of bags and other goodies
- Location will be at a private residence again so we can go later, be louder and party harder!
- Jerry will be cooking his delicious meats and KYA chili again!
- The quality of boards and bags has come a long way since that first tournament. So you won't get robbed by a bad lie or bounce. Feel free to BYOB (bring your own bags).
- Scoring and bracketing will be run using Scoreholio, the best scorekeeping app around.
- Round robin format means you will get at least 4 competitive games, guaranteed.
- Double elimination bracket means you can lose a game and still win it all!
- You get to meet other dads you didn't even realize had kids at PCY and form bonds for years to come.
- Sunday, April 24th - Save the Date!
Lastly, the legacy trophy is in process of getting the 2021 winners' names engraved. Once complete, it will be proudly displayed on the shelf of a booth at The Proper (honestly, if you live in La Canada and haven't had dinner and drinks at The Proper by now, where have you been?). I dub it 'the Champions booth' and the trophy should be treated like the Stanley Cup. If your name ain't on it, please don't touch it! :-)
Hope to see you there (at the tournament or The Proper). And remember, now and always: 'It's for the kids'
Until the next frame...
Clay
